The carbon fibre structure is the key to the car’s game-changing specification, being both ultra lightweight and extremely rigid. It will help the new Super Series to achieve a lightest dry weight of just 1283kg – significantly less than its closest competitor and 18kg lighter than the already featherweight McLaren 650S.
Lightness and strength are not the only benefits that Monocage II will bring. With a wider entrance, lower sill, and slimmer pillars, the new Super Series improves access into a driver environment that will offer unparalleled all-round visibility. It will be a supercar without traditional supercar compromises.
The 720S rear wing extends the full width of the car’s rear and will also act as an air-brake. The wing can change from its raised position to an upright angle, where it creates drag to help slow the car, in less than half a second.
The 720S will manage the air passing over it twice as effectively as the 650S. The wing, combined with a rear diffuser similar to the one used on the McLaren P1, will generate 50 percent more downforce than the outgoing Super Series car.
Cooling has been dramatically improved. This is partly thanks to two air ducts integrated into the new car’s doors. One of the ducts will channel air from the top of the door into the engine’s radiators. The lower one will draw air from the front wheel well to reduce pressure from underneath the arch and, consequently, increase downforce.
